HISTORYThe Road Safety Research Centre (RSRC) was established in 1995 at the Faculty of Engineering, University Putra Malaysia (UPM) by Prof. Ir. Dr. Radin Umar Radin Sohadi who is presently on-attachment as the first Director-General of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (MIROS), Ministry of Transport Malaysia which was officially established in September 2006. RSRC is the only research centre in UPM and the regional countries that focussed its research in the field of road safety. Its research in road safety covered issues related to safety of transport system and infrastructure, vehicle, driver and passenger, motorcycle rider and pillion, pedestrian, bicycle rider and other road users. RSRC presently focussed its research in two major sub-topics. Transport infrastructure safety is conducted in the research of pavement engineering. Meanwhile, the transport system safety is done through research in traffic and road safety engineering. RSRC is the only research centre in the region with a niche research in motorcycle rider and pillion safety. RSRC fulfils its research and consultancy functions through the collaboration of the key researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and the fellow researchers from other disciplines such as mechanical engineering, social science, economics, communication, epidemiology, medical and other agencies associated with road safety. Among the researches conducted include road accident modelling and management, motorcyclists conspicuity, motorcyclist behaviour modification, helmet wearing and standards, vehicle safety, motorcyclist injury control, accident costing, motorcycle lanes and standards, motorcyclist exposure control, pedestrian safety, bicyclist safety, high skid wearing course pavement, road safety education in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia.
VISION & MISSIONRoad Safety Research Centre, Faculty of Engineering, University Putra Malaysia aims to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence dedicated to the advancement of research in road safety for the benefit of humankind.
