PENGENALAN
Smart Farming Technology Research Centre (SFTRC), UPM, telah terlibat dalam penyelidikan mengenai konsep pengurusan ladang menggunakan teknologi moden untuk meningkatkan kuantiti dan kualiti produk pertanian. Pusat ini menangani pelbagai topik dalam perkembangan kejuruteraan pertanian dan teknologi baru termasuk mekanisasi yang sesuai; automasi pertanian; amalan penanaman pintar; teknologi sisa hijau dan sifar; GPS / GIS; penderaan jarak jauh; pengimbasan tanah; informatika pertanian; dan teknologi Internet of Things. Pusat ini telah memberi sumbangan penting dalam bidang ini termasuk penubuhan sebuah pusat ICT yang dikenali sebagai Pusat Komuniti Smart Farming di Tanjung Karang Selangor yang disokong oleh bahagian ICT Kementerian Sains & Inovasi pada tahun 2005. Di sana, penyelidik mengajar petani di komuniti bagaimana menggunakan komputer dan menggunakan ICT untuk menguruskan ladang mereka. Mereka telah membuat laman web khusus di mana petani boleh mengakses peta kesuburan petak sawah mereka dan menjejaki aktiviti mereka sepanjang musim. Melalui program ini, kira-kira 30 petani di Tanjung Karang didaftarkan di program ketepatan pusat. Dan dalam sembilan tahun sejak projek itu dimulakan, kawasan tersebut telah meningkatkan pengeluaran dari 4 metrik tan sehektar (purata kebangsaan) kepada lebih daripada 6 metrik tan sehektar. Kumpulan penyelidik di pusat itu telah menerbitkan lebih daripada 568 artikel dalam jurnal berprestij sejak sepuluh tahun yang lalu. Ia berjaya menghasilkan 539 pelajar pascasiswazah dalam kajian pertanian pintar. Kumpulan ini telah menjalankan penyelidikan kontrak bernilai berjuta-juta ringgit di peringkat kebangsaan dan antarabangsa terutamanya dalam penyelidikan pertanian dan pertanian ketepatan
