Chemical Engineering
is an integrated engineering discipline that deals with processes,
which change
the physical or chemical, biochemical or biological composition,
energy content
or physical state of materials. It is concerned with the whole process
from raw material
to finished products. It is a smart engineering because it uses simple
and elegant
techniques to produce a wide variety of products ranging from perfume to
rocket fuel,
and from microchips to the optical fiber for the information superhighway.
The chemical
engineer is responsible for the planning, design of product
and their
application.
Chemical engineers
are instrumental in providing basic needs and health,
convenience
and comfort, safety and aesthetics of modern living. They are involved
in diverse
industries such as petroleum processing, energy production, pharmaceutical
manufacturing, food processing, textiles, plastic and chemical manufacturing,
which are
generally very large scale and capital intensive. Chemical engineers are
therefore
in the forefront of technological innovations and high-tech operation,
engaged in
the conception and development of very interesting projects. They
employ a broad
spectrum of knowledge from various disciplines of sciences and
engineering
to arrive at a cost-effective, environmentally sound and safe,
simple and
beautiful solution to a
complex problem.
In short, chemical
Engineering is a science and art dealing with the relationships
of Physics
and chemical changes. It is one of the youngest branch of engineering.
This profession
came into existence toward the end of the ninteenth
century when
the need for technical workers with a combined training in Physics,
Chemistry
and Mechanical Engineering became apparent. Since that time,
the profession
of chemical engineering has increased in status ,
until now
stands as an integral and essential part of

The Department
of Chemical and Environmental Engineering was established in August
1996. This
new department is full of vigor and is eager to share with students the
conventional
and frontier breaking ideas of chemical and environmental
engineering,
and the challenges and opportunities in a dynamic engineering career.
The experienced
and qualified academic staffs are well supported by many
research fellows
and technicians in teaching, tutorial and laboratory classes.
The students
also receive personal supervision to enhance their learning
and professional
development from lecturers who are actively involved i
n industries
and government agencies.
The laboratory
facilities at the Department of Chemical and Environmental
Engineering
are modest but adequate at its inception, and it is in the process
of acquiring
more state-of-the-art equipment in the near future. The computer
system at
the Faculty of Engineering is amongst the best in the country,
and it is
connected to the Internet viaa fiber optic network to the powerful
Sun-Workstation
and many PCs. Through the same computer network the
student can
accessa wide range of software and
the library,which
is very well stocked
with references.
