April 20, Petaling Jaya - Saw Ting Yik, a final year undergraduate from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, has successfully bagged UPM a Gold Medal Award from the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). The IEM Gold Medal is awarded to the best final year engineering student in local institution of higher learning around Malaysia.
He was presented with the gold medal at the IEM 54th Annual Dinner and Awards Night, held on 20 April 2013 at One World Hotel, in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement (CGPA 3.934). Apart from being excellent academically, Saw Ting Yik also excels in leadership as he was the president of Chemical Engineering Students’ Society (ChESS) in 2011 and the vice secretary for PEMAJU in 2010/2011.

Previously, he has won 1st place in a public speaking competition organized in conjunction with “Water! 2011: Youth Conference”, an event co-organized by Coca-Cola, Malaysia Nature Society and UPM to help raise awareness on global water crisis. He was invited as one of the panels for the forum held during the event for winning the competition.
He also won 1st runner-up in Accenture Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Forum Essay Competition 2012, receiving RM 1000 cash prize. This winning essay was also featured in the 13th newsletters issue of Malaysian Society for Engineering & Technology (MySET).
Besides that, he also participated as the sole chemical engineering student in a group of mechanical engineers to represent UPM in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2011. He focused on engine development and helped to construct a prototype ethanol vehicle capable to travel 190 km/L gasoline.
Last but not least, he participated in various camps and activities including National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) 2011 and NanoMalaysia Olympiad Camp 2012. He is also a guitarist who has performed in a few concerts including 15th Yin Zi Modern Music Concert” organized by UPM and “Rhythm of the Flaming Soul” organized by his friends. |
