The Aerodynamics Research Group currently works on wing design which is a highly integrated process involving other engineering disciplines such as structures, vibration, and manufacturing.

Wind tunnel experimental work, especially for vortex generation, flow visualization and aerodynamic characteristics is carried out by using highly sophisticated devices such as Partial Image Velocimetry (PIV), Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Constant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), six-component balance, and is supported by subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels.

Besides experimental work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) through programs such as FLUENT, PHOENIX and STAR CD is carried out by this group. Solving flutter and vibration problems utilizing analysis and testing in order to provide input to improve preliminary airplane design and to verify that margins of safety with respect to flutter are adequate is also one our interests.

Structure design using composite materials, high-speed dynamic loads, and projectile impact testing is also conducted by the Aerodynamics Research Group

Computational and experimental studies have been conducted for various cooling technique models. These include rotating disc systems and film cooling solutions. The flow and heat transfer data may be numerically simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. PHOENIX and STAR-CD, and a specific purpose CFD code is developed based on the TEACH-t code. The experimental study is equipped with a specific purpose testing facility that allows point-wise and whole field measurements of flow and heat transfer data.

This group also focuses on the turbine blade film cooling study and the basic operating principles of jet engines, microturbines and combustion. Previous work in propulsion is elucidated and applied in order to understand and predict the characteristics of engine components and heat exchanger performance. The related works are more on measuring the heat transfer using Thermochromic Liquid Crystal (TLC) techniques.
